Fundraiser of the Year – Paula’s Run team
Carmel Loughlin began fundraising for Campaign after sadly losing her sister, Paula Gallen, to breast cancer in February 2008. Inspired by Paula’s love of running and walking Carmel, Paula’s husband, Pat Gallen, and his sister Christine Lynch, organised a successful 5k run and walk in Castlederg, County Tyrone. Raising over £8000 for the charity, Paula’s Run has attracted over 1000 people each year from the Castlederg and surrounding communities.

Where Does The Money Raised Go?

Some of the money raised goes to the Paula Gallen Pink Tribute Fund - The project that we have adopted is:

Adopt a Project - Northern Ireland Scientist: Dr Paul Mullan Institution: Queen’s University Belfast Research category: Treatment Full cost of research: £205,524 There is a real need to identify patients who will not respond to treatments so that their clinicians can prescribe more effective ones. Dr Mullan will establish how a gene called BRCA1 and a molecule named p63 are involved in breast cancer treatments not working for some people. By supporting this project you will ensure scientists have the information to help them develop ways to predict who is unlikely to benefit from treatments, so clinicians can tailor them to each individual and ultimately save more lives. “As little as thirty years ago there were very few treatment options for breast cancer. This meant fewer women survived. Currently, 80 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer will be alive in five years and this is due to increased breast cancer awareness, earlier detection and improvements in treatments. By funding this project you can help us reach our goal; to maximise survival chances and increase the number of women who survive for at least five years.” Dr Mullan, Queen's University Belfast If you would like further information about adopting this project, please contact us on 020 7749 3700 or adoptaproject@breastcancercampaign.org
